EDI, VANS
and the Internet

  • EDI is here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future, however the question is will it be done on a VAN (Value Added Network) or the Internet. Companies that have invested heavily in VAN providers, those with over 20 years of relationships, will be the last to migrate. It is estimated though that over the next 5 years most EDI business will have shifted to the Internet. The main reason sited for the speed of this migration is security.

  • Standards called (OBI) Open Buying on the Internet are being constructed to define the standards needed to connect purchasing systems to online catalog systems. The EDI 850 document will be sent via HTTP to a purchasing system that authorizes the purchase and verifies the payment mechanism. Security is provided by the (SSL) Secure Socket Layer or by a (VPN) Virtual Private Network.
For more information about the OBI visit OBI Consortium Web Site.
