RemoteCE

Step 4 - Defining a Remote Site as a PPC Device

RemoteDesk manages PPC/HPC handheld devices in the same fashion as regular remote client sites. Each PocketPC device is defined as a remote client. Each device has their own synchronization folder as well as other unique settings.

Add a new remote client site as you would normally do and enter the basic site information on the first page. See the RemoteDesk manual for Remote Maintenance. To choose the PPC communications, enable the "External" communication method and then click on the "Gateway Settings" button. Note the "External" method would have to first be selected in the Company Profile to have it as an option here. The Gateway Settings form has four tabs for each optional gateway. Click on the "PPC/HPC Devices" tab. For the standard RemoteCE interface enable the "PPC/HPC Data Collection" form with a click box at the top of the page. Then click on "Batch Ascii File Transfer" as the method of interface. Set the "Inbox" and the "Outbox" paths to point at your PocketPC " My Documents" folder. Typically ActiveSync creates a folder under the standard "My Documents" folder using the name given to the PPC device combined with My Documents such as "c:\My Documents\NewPPCName My Documents". This should be both the Inbox and Outbox data path. The File Mask and Format options are dimmed on this form as they are set globally in the Company Profile.

Once the remote sites for your PPC devices are defined, all communications to them are done through the Send and Receive functions. To complete the communications, Microsoft ActiveSync must be installed and connected for each device. The data files are sent to and from the PocketPC devices via ActiveSync.
